The Howard Brown Health Center's volunteer program is a group of enthusiastic and extraordinary people who are passionate about healthcare and the LGBTQ community.  Whether you have a talent for working with people or your strengths are in other areas, we are interested in your skills!

Once we receive your volunteer application, we will review your area(s) of interest and availability and contact you if we have a volunteer position to offer.

Volunteer Opportunities

Administrative Volunteers
Shift(s):  Shifts will vary depending on the nature of the project. 

Commitment:  The commitment would vary depending on the duration of the project(s).

Summary:
Howard Brown Health Center services well over 36,000 individuals each year.  Administrative processes are at the heart of the top quality service we provide each and everyday to our clients.  Administrative volunteers can help with a variety of tasks, all of which support our commitment to our clients.  We utilize administrative volunteers in a various ways including scheduling, scanning, filing, data-entry, tracking of information and receptionist work.  If you have basic computer skills and you are organized with attention to detail, the administrative volunteer opportunity would be perfect for you.

Bitch to Quit (BTQ)  Research Recruitment Volunteer
Shift time:
Shifts vary depending on availability and needs

Commitment: Minimum 3 hours per week, Minimum 3-month commitment

Summary:
The Research Recruitment Volunteer position offers the opportunity for individuals to engage in participant recruitment for a NIH sponsored clinical research study, Bitch to Quit (BTQ). The purpose of this research is to test a culturally targeted smoking cessation intervention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals.

Volunteers will be trained to engage in community-based outreach and recruitment in the LGBTQ community as well as the tactics, strategy and organization of targeted community-based recruitment.  Volunteers will also have additional opportunities to enhance their knowledge in clinical research including tasks related to the development and testing of the culturally targeted smoking cessation intervention for LGBTQ smokers.

Brown Elephant Resale Shop Volunteer
Shift time:
12:00p.m. to 4:00p.m.

Commitment: 
Weekdays-Same day each week for 3-months
Weekends-Every other weekend for 6-months

Summary:
The Brown Elephant Resale Stores operate throughout the Chicagoland area and the revenue generated by donations and purchases help fund services for the more than 50% of Howard Brown Health Center clients who are under or uninsured. Volunteers are needed to help support our day-to-day operations. Volunteers serve our customers in any of the following ways: General cleaning, stock help, donation maintenance, greeting customers, tending to the appearance and organization of the sales floor, and other tasks as needed. Please go to your Brown Elephant store of interest to apply for a volunteer position.

BYC Drop-In Youth Worker Volunteer
Shift time: 
Monday through Friday
11:00a.m. to 4:00p.m.

Commitment: 
Same day each week for at least 6-months

Summary:
The mission of the BYC (Broadway Youth Center) is to offer a safe space for LGBTQ street-based youth to access resources and referrals to obtain short- and long- term life goals. By supporting self-empowerment and encouraging self-advocacy and accountability, we serve as a catalyst, and not a cradle, for youth to access the drop-in space. The Drop-in Youth Worker volunteers is responsible for providing youth-centered support to at-risk LGBTQ youth, youth experiencing homelessness, and/or street-based youth. This will be achieved by providing basic needs and linking youth to resources and services within the Broadway Youth Center.

BYC Health Educator Volunteer
Shift times(s): 
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
2:30p.m. to 8:00p.m.
Wednesday
9:30a.m. to 3:00p.m. or 2:30p.m. to 8:00p.m.

Commitment: 
Same day each week for at least 6-months

Summary: 
The mission of the BYC (Broadway Youth Center) is to offer a safe space for LGBTQ street-based youth to access resources and referrals to obtain short- and long- term life goals.  The health education volunteer position offers the opportunitiy for individuals to learn the day-to-day workings of the community-based HIV prevention and testing program.  Volunteers will be trained to provide HIV interventions such as HIV/STD testing and couseling, community-based outreach, and support/education groups for youth, ages 12-24 years old.

Volunteers will have additional opportunities to enhance their knowledge of HIV prevention best practices. including harm reduction and anti-oppression principles, through consistent interaction with other young, passionate health education professionals, as well as with the clientele accessing services at the Broadway Youth Center.

Clinic Based Counselor and Tester
Shift time(s): 
 
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday
1:00 to 7:00p.m. or 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m.

Commitment:
At least 3 hours on days listed above during walk-in hours

Summary:
As a Volunteer Counselor and Tester, you would assist in performing, running, and maintaining rapid HIV tests. Following Illinois Department of Public Health or Chicago Department of Public Health’s counselor and tester training, volunteers would deliver both negative and preliminary positive rapid results to patients.  To be considered for this volunteer position, candidates must be certified in counseling and testing through the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) or Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and(or) equivalent experience.  

Medical Records Volunteer 
Shift time:
Tuesdays or Thursdays
9:00a.m to 1:00p.m. 

Commitment:
Same day each week for at least 3-months

Summary:
The medical records and referrals department specializes in a systematic documentation of a single patient's medical history and care across time at HBHC.  This volunteer position would include importing/indexing medical records, data-entry of patient information, scanning charts or loose files into DocuTrack as well as other duties as needed.

Outreach Administrative Volunteers
Shift time(s):
Varies, normally around 3-hours long

Commitment:
6-12 months per year, 3-4 times a month (Regular schedule is pre-established)

Summary:
HIV/STI prevention for everyone is a high priority for Howard Brown Health Center. Through community outreach and prevention efforts, we reach a broad and diverse community throughout Chicagoland. We utilize volunteers to help support our outreach efforts year-round. The Outreach Administrative Assistant will be tasked with providing customer service to walk-in clients during outreach events that occur in the suburbs and city. In addition to this, reviewing, correcting, and quality assuring forms for testing and counseling will be done during a shift.

Street Outreach Volunteers
Shift time(s):
Friday or Saturday, normally around 3-hours long

Commitment:
6-12 months per year, 2-3 times a month (Regular schedule is pre-established)

Summary:
HIV/STI prevention for everyone is a high priority for Howard Brown Health Center. Through community outreach and prevention efforts, we reach a broad and diverse community throughout Chicagoland. We utilize volunteers to help support our street outreach efforts year-round. The Street Outreach Worker will assist in passing out safer sex kits, maintaining tick sheets for clients being seen during outreach, provide basic HIV/STD knowledge, and give referrals as needed to Howard Brown Health Center.

Special Event Opportunities
Shift time(s):  Varies depending on the event

Summary:  
Howard Brown Health Center participates in a variety of events throughout the year that we need volunteer support with.  Volunteers would help to hand out promotional materials, connect event attendees to HBHC programs and services and represent the agency to the public.  Some examples of special events that we recruit volunteers for are Pride, Market Days, AIDS Walk/Run and IML.

Walk-in Clinic Greeter
Shift time: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
1:00p.m. to 6:00p.m.

Summary:
The Howard Brown Health Center Walk-in Greeter/Receptionist is responsibile for greeting and electronically registering all clients & patients accessing clinical services at the Sheridan Road facility.  The receptionist is also responsible for supporting the overall programmic operation by assisting staff with administrative and clerical tasks.  This is a great opportunity for someone looking to get experience with patient services and customer service.  All the necessary training is provided.


Internships and Externships

Howard Brown Health Center offers a wide variety of intern and extern positions designed to provide students with real hands-on experience in a community-based healthcare organization.  Some of our opportunities have included Health Education, Human Resources, Behavioral Health, Medical Assisting and many more!

Duration varies with the program, and preference is given to students currently enrolled in a degree program.  Some of our opportunities may require applicants to be at least 18 years old.

Internships are on a volunteer basis. Some offer credit for academic programs.

We are currently not offering any opportunities in this area.

Medical Services

We are currently not offering clinical rotations for Medical, Nursing or Nurse Practitioner students.
