Methamphetamine, also known as crystal, Christy, crank, ice, meth and Tina is a highly addictive stimulant drug that has become a serious problem for Chicago’s gay community. Crystal dramatically increases the release of the brain’s pleasure and alert chemicals, producing feelings of power, confidence, invulnerability and intense sexual desire. While these effects are appealing, they do not last. Ultimately, users experience dependence, depression, health problems, impaired sexual functioning, occupational problems and the loss of valued relationships.
Howard Brown has developed an intensive treatment track, Crystal Clear, to specifically address methamphetamine abuse and dependence in our community. Components of the program address body image, depression, homophobia, same-sex interpersonal violence, and sexual addiction. Succeeding in recovery requires a stable, supportive environment outside of treatment. With this in mind, Crystal Clear provides assistance with finding housing, clothing, referrals for legal assistance, employment counseling and connecting to 12-step community resources.
This intensive outpatient program operates Monday through Saturday, and participants also meet with their individual counselors once a week.
Do not let financial concerns stop you from calling for help. Crystal Clear is funded by the Chicago Department of Public Health to provide free-of-charge counseling for members of the LGBTQ community struggling with meth abuse or dependence who have limited financial resources and are uninsured/underinsured.
