Howard Brown Health Center provides mental health services specifically tailored for the LGBTQ community, through counseling and psychotherapy available in our Behavioral Health Services department. Individual, couples, family, and group therapies are provided by our team of experienced counselors, social workers, and psychologists. To speak with us about our services or to obtain referrals, please contact 773-388-1600.
To request counseling services at Howard Brown Health Center, please call 773-388-1600. A Patient Services Representative will schedule a short 10-15 minute phone interview that fits your schedule--often on the same day as your inquiry. During the call, a counselor will gather basic information about why you are seeking therapy, and what type of therapist and appointment time would best meet your needs. If we have a therapist that matches your needs, that therapist will contact you to arrange a first appointment. If not, the counselor will recontact you and offer referrals to places/counselors that might be a good match.
Victims of domestic violence should call 773-388-8882 for immediate assistance.
Those seeking help with substance abuse issues should call Howard Brown's Recovering With Pride program at 773-388-8891 to speak with a therapist who specializes in substance abuse. There is no fee for a substance abuse assessment in the Recovering With Pride program.
Schedule of fees:
Individual Intake Assessment: $250.00
Individual Psychotherapy: $150.00
Family or Couples Therapy: $150.00
Group Psychotherapy: $60.00
Discounted fees are available to clients with documented need. Howard Brown is a member of numerous mental health networks, accepting a variety of insurance plans. If we do not have counselors that accept your insurance plan, we will be glad to offer referrals to other therapists in your area that do.

Howard Brown is a member of numerous mental health networks, accepting a variety of insurance plans. Alternate referrals for adult, sliding scale psychiatry services are included in the following list, which is updated regularly.
Alternate Sliding Scale Psychiatry Resources
This list will be updated as additional resources are located and confirmed.
Here are some ideas for locating alternate psychiatry services and/or ways to continue to get your medicine:
Consider approaching your medical provider to write your prescription in future. If your medical provider is not at Howard Brown Health Center, we will be glad to send your provider information about your recent treatment and prescriptions. If you and your provider are comfortable with this arrangement, you may not need to get a separate psychiatrist.
If you do not have a primary care provider to prescribe your medicine, consider getting one. You can look for sliding scale medical care at www.leslieslist.org.
If you need to find a new psychiatrist, consult the list provided below. Three important things to know about agencies or hospitals offering sliding scale psychiatry services:
- Many serve people that live in a particular “catchment” area. This means that they receive funding to provide services to people in a particular neighborhood or area of town. When you call about services, ask them about this and make sure that you live in an area they serve before you do an intake.
- Many require sliding scale psychiatry clients to also be in therapy with a counselor at their agency. If you are already in therapy here at Howard Brown, they might require that you change your therapist to someone that works with them. If you decide to do that, your therapist at Howard Brown will gladly forward information or even talk to your new therapist to make the change as easy as possible for you.
- Most require an “intake” or assessment to see if you are eligible for the services they provide and to make sure you’d be a good match for the services they can provide. Arranging an intake does not mean you are guaranteed a psychiatrist or that they’ll have openings they can offer you.
